This is the last baby of Daisy's that was for sale. He was born on Oct. 11, 2006. As you know, we aid the moms during birth. We have tools ready (suction bulb, scissors, paper towels), along with a trash can for the afterbirth, (they get upset tummies if they "clean them all"), and a box and towels for the new babies. Generally, the moms start to dig and tear at the sheets in their birthing box when labor starts. On this particular day, Daisy just sat in her box all morning. George had work to do out in the shop, and I was at my house. He came in to check on her frequently, he knew she was getting very close. The last time he came in, Daisy had given birth to a beautiful baby girl. She apparently didn't like where the box was, so she pushed the stereo out of the corner of the living room. Then she took the scissors, the trash can liner, the suction bulb, and two towels to the corner. When George came in, he couldn't believe his eyes. He called me immediately. She had the baby cleaned and dry, and wrapped in the towel, out of the way so she could have the next one. She was so proud of herself. The rest of the deliveries didn't go so smooth. All of them were breach and dry births, but all were very healthy. I had to hold on to the back feet, tail, and rear end and help mom when she pushed. She was awesome! Needless to say, he had to rearrange the furniture a little to move the birthing box to the corner she chose. It never ceases to amaze us how intelligent these dogs are.

Dumplin's Story

Dumplin' is almost 5 years old. She has been bred many times, but never took. We thought she was barren. She always had normal heat cycles, and Jacob has always tried, but nothing. She loves puppies so much and has always been so good with them. Even though they weren't hers, she would act like they were. So when she bred with Jacob this time around, we really didn't think it would happen. Then one day, we looked at her and she had swelled over night! She has been spoiled ever since, getting to sleep in the house and milk and egg in her dog food. She had 12 puppies. It took 16 hours to have them all. Unfortunately, only 10 have survived. That is just to be expected with any birth. That is the very sad truth. They are very tiny, and we have to constantly make sure all are able to eat. She is a very happy dog, to say the least. She acts like a pro. She is very gentle and keeps them clean and very close to her. If one rolls away, she will bring it back. They have great lungs, very loud when they lose the teat. There have been so many miracles here. That is why George chose His name for the business. He had to make a decision about whether or not he should go full time with the business or keep his day job, because of course it is always scary to not have that weekly income. He looked at all the things God has done for him and given him. He prayed for guidance. God made his choice for him. And if he wasn't absolutely sure before, these 10 little miracles sealed the deal. Congratulations Dumplin'! Thank You, Lord

This is Lil' Dumplin's Golden Sweetheart. We call her Tweety. She was born on March 23, 2007. She was so small. George thought the water sac was empty at first. She was about the size of a mouse and was pretty weak. She didn't know how to eat at first either. I slept on a mattress on the floor beside the birthing box. I got up every half hour to try to get her to eat. She finally figured it out but was getting pushed away by the bigger puppies, so I continued to make sure she got to eat. She made it through the night and seemed to be stronger. After a while, we noticed that her chest was as flat as a humans and that her front legs were pushed out to the side. We were worried she wouldn't come out of it and decided to keep her and take care of her as long as God let us have her. The flat chest actually helped her eat. She was so streamlined that she would climb over the top of all her litter mates, and then dive straight down to eat. All you could see was her little tail sticking straight up in the air, and then disappear. When she was around 4 weeks, her chest started to round out to normal, but she only weighed 2 lbs. Her litter mates always picked on her, knocking her down and pinning her to the ground. When they were started on solid food, hers had to be crunched up even smaller so she wouldn't choke on it. When she was 6 weeks old she weighed 3lbs. and 2 oz. She came home with me. Sierra fell in love. She is 9 1/2 months old. She treats Tweety like she is her baby. They play non-stop. At 7 1/2 weeks, Tweety finally weighed 5 lbs and was able to get her first puppy shot. She fits right in here and she goes back and forth with Sierra and I to God's Golden Acres to see daddy and her real mommy, Lil' Dumplin'. She is almost 10 weeks old now and I am in love again. She had to fight to survive and when she is playing you can see the spirit and the will in her personality shining through. Tweety is another one of God's many blessings.

There really isn't anything routine about births. Every one is different. Every one has its own story. This story is about 2 deliveries in one day. About 4 AM on the morning of July 29th, 2007, George woke me to tell me that Pumpkin wouldn't let him sleep and he was going out to the shop to get some cleaning done. I said ok and rolled over to go back to sleep, or so I thought. Pumpkin wasn't going to let me sleep and neither was Lace. Lace kept trying to get into bed with me. Pumpkin was antsy and couldn't be still for very long. We knew she was beginning labor. If it wasn't one waking me, it was the other. KIDS! Ha Ha Ha. Finally, about 5 AM, I decided to get up. I put my shoes on and went out with Pumpkin so she could potty. She wanted to go outside so badly. Lace just went into the kitchen and laid down. Pumpkin did her thing and came back inside. I laid back down on the bed, but she kept trying to get into bed with me. I checked her because there was a small spot of water on the carpet protector by the bed. LO and Behold, there was her water sac just about ready to break. Her belly was as hard as a rock. It Was Time! George was still outside, but he had taken the radio with him in case I needed to page him. I coaxed Pumpkin into the birthing room (I actually had to push her through the doorway). I crawled into her birthing box and sat down and she came in and laid down with her head on my leg. She did not want me to leave. Her water broke and she had her first baby about 6:30 AM. She did great, even with mostly breech births. She had her 6th little girl around 10:30 AM. She was so happy. She kept pushing for a while, but she was finished. All girls and all healthy. It is the first time we have had a mom have all of one sex. Lace kept trying to peek in a lot, and she was digging under the end table occasionally, not unusual during the last couple of weeks of pregnancy. We checked her many times that morning, but it didn't look like she was ready. She wasn't pushing at all. About noon, George fixed us lunch. Pumpkin was content with her babies and resting. Lace was at the table with all of the other girls, begging as usual. She even had a good appetite (Usually, the moms lose their appetite about 12-24 hours before birth). We finished our lunch. While we were clearing the table, George jokingly spoke to Lace. She was laying under the end table. He said, "OK. We are done with lunch Lace. You can have your babies now." Literally five minutes after he said that to her, he asked where she was. I looked over at the end table and told him she was under it and cleaning herself. He looked at her, and said, "There's a baby!" Of course I said, "Yeah right!", because he is always messing with me. He was serious this time! There, in the living room, under the end table, Lace had her first baby. A beautiful little girl! We moved her into the birthing room and put her in her box. She went on to have 7 more babies. Altogether, 6 girls and 2 boys. She had her last baby around 7:30 PM. We had sat through lunch, tossing her scraps, she was just being Lace. She wasn't pacing or antsy. Like I said, we had been checking her, and I had been watching her to see if she was pushing at all. Her tummy wasn't even hard. She must be the most obedient Golden ever or the most polite. She took George seriously and started having her babies, after we ate! There is never anything dull about life at God's Golden Acres!

OUR DARLING DARLIN'

We recently had a scare at God's Golden Acres. It turned out well, but only with God's help. Darlin' and Sugar disappeared from the farm on Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 around 9 AM. The dogs were all outside that morning. Pumpkin was involved in a spat with Satin. George broke it up and took them inside to make sure they were OK. It happens sometimes when hormones are raging, either from heat or pregnancy. They were both okay. He was only inside for about 30 minutes. When he went back out, Sugar and Darlin' were missing. George called and called, but no luck. He went out and walked the farm, going through the woods calling for them, but didn't see any signs of them. He even took Angel and Jacob to track them. He called me about 4 PM and told me what had happened. We were devastated. Darlin' is my girl. She is always by my side, following me from room to room. We are very close. George is a Sugar's daddy like Sugar is a daddy's girl. All day and most of the night George kept driving around, talking to neighbors, and calling for Sugar and Darlin'. No one had seen anything. I couldn't sleep that night and I went driving around at midnight looking for them. The next morning, Sugar returned..... Alone. She was very tired, and also crying and whining. It's one of those times you wish they could talk to you. George was elated to see Sugar, hugging and kissing her. He let Sugar rest for a while and then took her, Angel and Jacob out to search again. It was getting colder, raining and sleeting. They traveled the farm again, with no signs of Darlin' anywhere. Sugar hardly left George's side for 3 days after. I put an add in the local papers and on-line communities. I made calls and sent e-mail's trying to find her. We prayed and prayed the she would return to us, even if she was sick or possibly dead. She deserved to be buried on the farm where she had lived her whole life. You see, Darlin' is 8 years old. She had a stroke the summer of 2006. This left her with partial blindness and a lower body temperature than normal, not to mention she became over weight and tired easily. She had some right side weakness at first, but she seemed to overcome that. She had since retired from motherhood. It was very cold Thursday and Friday nights, in the single digits. Each day, he called and searched for her, trudging through the snow, but never any sign. The only thing he had found was a turkey carcass down behind the kennels next to the fence line. But no sign of her anywhere. Saturday morning, our Darlin' had been gone for 3 whole days. It had been freezing and snowing and she was out there all alone. George went out again to search for her. Nothing. We were becoming disheartened, but we kept praying for her return. When he got home, he ate, warmed up and said another prayer for her. Then he noticed the message light blinking on the answering machine. The message was from the next door neighbor. It was their fence line where he had found the carcass. They said the magic words, "We have your dog"! George called them back and they told him Charlie had found her in the barn when he went to get a round bale for his cows. They didn't try to go to her, they didn't want to risk scaring her off. They just made sure she didn't leave. She must have made her way to the barn to stay warm in the hay. He went down to their place and called her name. She came running out of the barn to George, whining like crazy. She jumped in the van to go home! When he called me, his first words were "She's home!" I cried and cried, thanking God and thanking the neighbors. Every time he called while she was gone, my stomach flipped. This was truly a miracle for us. Our prayers answered yet again. We get so many miracles, large and small, at God's Golden Acres. That is why we call it God's Golden Acres to begin with. Since Darlin' has been home, she seems to have a new lease on life. She is happier, more active, sees better, has lost a little weight, and even has a more regular body temperature. I guess she just needed an adventure. I don't think I have ever cried so much. It took me this long to write this story without tears. Thank you, God, for keeping our girls safe and guiding them home to us. Below, you will find advice on things you can do if you have a missing pet, along with contact numbers or email addresses for missing pet agencies. I hope you all never have to go through this, but if you do, this information hopefully, will help. |
